# Chat Modes

> Switch between the default model, Max Mode, and the Alternate Model, and retry a response in a different mode

Every chat runs on Apers' default model unless you choose otherwise. Two toggles in the chat composer change that: **Max** for the most capable model, and the **Alternate model** as a backup. Eco Mode switches on by itself when you run out of credits.

## The Modes

**Default model** `mode`

What every chat uses unless you turn on another mode. The right choice for most work.

**Max Mode** `mode`

The most capable model, for complex analysis. Click **Max** in the chat composer to turn it on. It uses about twice the credits of the default model, and it's available on Pro and above.

**Alternate Model** `mode`

A backup model from a different AI provider. Turn it on with the **Alternate model** toggle (the layers icon) in the chat composer if the default model is having trouble or isn't responding. It's available on every plan, including in Eco Mode.

**Eco Mode** `mode`

Not a toggle: subscribers switch to Eco Mode automatically when their credit balance reaches zero, and chat continues at no credit cost on a lighter model. See [When You Run Out](https://docs.apers.app/credits/overview.md#when-you-run-out).

## How the Modes Combine

* **Max Mode and the Alternate Model are mutually exclusive.** Turning one on turns the other off.
* **Max Mode is unavailable in Eco Mode.** If you had Max Mode on, it comes back once your credits are refilled.
* **The Alternate Model works in Eco Mode**, still at no credit cost, so it's a backup for Eco Mode too.
* **Your choice stays on for that browser tab** until you turn it off, so new messages in the tab keep using it.

> [!TIP]
>
> Start with the default model. Reach for Max Mode when a task needs deeper reasoning, such as reviewing a complex model for errors or working through a tricky deal structure.

## Retrying a Response in Another Mode

If a response isn't what you wanted, click the **Regenerate response** icon under it. The menu offers:

| Option | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Try again** | Runs the same request again in your current mode, shown on the right |
| **Try again with Max Mode** | Retries with Max Mode. Not shown when you're already in Max Mode or in Eco Mode |
| **Try again with default model** | Shown when you're in Max Mode or on the Alternate Model |
| **Try again with Alternate Model** | Retries on the Alternate Model. Not shown when you're already on it |

If your plan doesn't include Max Mode, the Max Mode option is labeled **Pro plan**.
